The population of Enugu state is approximately 6 million today.
Enugu remains the capital of Enugu State having served as the capital of the former Eastern Region and Old Anambra State.

There are 17 local government areas in Enugu state. They are:

- OJI RIVER
Enugu state has many educational institutions. Educational institutions in the state include,. University of Nigeria, enugu state university of science and technology, institute of management and technology (IMT), college of education, Eha-Amufu, school of physiotherapy studies, oji river and other privately established institutions such as osisatech, caritas university education remains one of the most thriving industries in the state.
INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Enugu state has a fully developed industrial infrastructure. The Emene industrial Estate remains the primae industrial site and there is concerted effort to establish industrial Estate in all the local government areas of the state.
Enugu has a good airport within the Emene industrial Area. There is adequate satellite telecommunications and excellent network of the federal and state highways. There are about 52 industries operating in the state, three of which are large scale and the rest belong to the small and medium scale category. ANAMMCO, the manufacturers of assorted and quality automobile products is one of the big three industries in Enugu state. There is also the project development Agency (PRADA) that fabricates and manufactures-wide range of components and industrial product.
Enugu is fast growing into a mega cosmopolitan industrial and business city with the inflow of major financial and corporate manufacturing concerns.
AGRO & MINERAL RESOURCE
The main agricultural products are rice, palm produce, cassava, cashew nuts and citrus fruits.
Different solid minerals are available in commercial and large quantity. Notable among them is coal which earned Enugu the sobriquet. The coal city.
Investment opportunities for which local raw materials are available include Battery manufacturing, Pharmaceuticals, Industrials Starch and adhesive, pottery and ceramics. Others are coal-based industries, commercialization of research findings and manufacturing of automobile parts for the motor manufacturing industry, food processing and fruit juice processing.
ABOUT ENUGU, THE COAL CITY
Enugu, the coal city and the Trade fair city, was the regional capital of the former Eastern Region.
It remains the capital of Enugu state. The city was situated on a hill and is rich in coal deposits. Apart from private industrial establishments, government established three industrial layouts.
Enugu has several markets but Ogbete is the main market. Enugu is located at the hub of vast network of highways am dos accessible by bus, car, train, and plane, good and efficient transport facilities. The thriving spirit of enterprise of the residents and the high population of erudite businessmen and women make Enugu a potential business centre of the east. Recreational facilities abound in the city. The present government in Enugu State is creating the much needed enabling environment through infrastructural development to enhance and facilitate business and economic development in Enugu and its environs.
